Facials are not only a great way to self-care, but they have many benefits when done regularly.  It is a great way to relax, unwind, and rejuvenate. Surprisingly, facials have been around for centuries as people all over are looking for ways to achieve beautiful skin. They are often done by an esthetician through a resort spa, med spa, or dermatologist’s office.

Here’s 10 reasons you need to treat yourself to regular facials…

1. Clears Pores

Facials are a great way to clear blockages in your pores. Dirt and oil is typically removed from your pores typically through a variety of products such as alpha hydroxy acids (which break down that tacky glue that binds dirt and dead skin to your complexion) as well as an exfoliants.  Most estheticians combine the use of steam and extractions to really make sure you have removed what they can during each facial (but remember it’s a process and it takes more than one for the best results).

 2. Higher Grade Products

Over the counter products are not tailored or chosen for your specific skin type by a licensed professional. You can drastically benefit from hands elected products which are catered to what your skin needs.  These products are dermatologist grade meaning they are stronger and have more of an impact than day to day products that you can purchase from Sephora or Nordstrom, for example.

 3. Expert Skin Analysis

Your esthetician will be able to analyze your skin and decide the best treatment plan for you.  Our skin is often changing between hormones, things we put in our bodies, weather, etc. so it is important that we, again, have a licensed professional give you the right TLC your skin needs.

 4. Professional Exfoliation

If your skin isn’t exfoliated properly then you will get a buildup of dead skin, oils and dirt which can lead to blemishes and breakouts. The exfoliation part during the facial will rid your skin of all these toxins.  The right type of exfoliation, especially a deeper exfoliation such as microdermabrasion, can dramatically improve your skin.  It evens out your complexion, lightens and brightens, and cleans your pores on a deeper level (it is kind of like a power wash for your pores).

 5. Increases Circulation

The massage part of the facial can also help to improve circulation.  Facial massage improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, which can enhance the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to cells as well as detox and maintain fluid levels that fight against infection.  In also decreases inflammation by expelling waste and unwanted “junk” in the body.

 6. Reduces Stress

Having a facial can help to eliminate stress. Taking a moment for yourself is not only deserved but necessary to function at optimum pace and execute at your fullest potential. Stress is like carrying around big storage boxes in your head- the boxes block space and continue to increase and multiply over time if not dealt with.  It is hard to see what you need to do  or get done if you don’t have the space or capacity to do it. The gentle massage component of the facial activates your sympathetic nervous system. This reduces your anxiety levels and uplifts your mood (helping to clear out those boxes and making space)!

 7. Intense Hydration

A facial can give your skin a much-needed boost of hydration! Your skin is exposed to so many toxins everyday such as air pollution, bacteria, chemicals, makeup and so on, all of which can dehydrate your complexion! A facial can give it some intense hydration leaving it soft and healthy looking and restoring balance.

 8. Delays The Aging Process

Regular facials can help you keep your skin younger and more youthful! Facials (especially ones geared towards rejuvenation)help boost cell regeneration and promote collagen development.

 9. Treats Acne

Some facials are designed to help fight the symptoms of acne and what it leaves behind. Estheticians often use products containing retinol and salicylic acid at varying levels to treat acne. Peels (especially those with salicylic acid) as well as microdermabrasion help reduce acne and scars.

 10.  Helps Tired Looking Eyes

Facial experts know that the under-eye area is a delicate one. This area is treated carefully with products that help to rejuvenate and brighten.  Cucumbers are often used to help as they contain vitamin K which rehydrates tired skin and eliminates dark circles and wrinkles.

If you are not someone who has ventured out into the world of facials, you should.  It is a great way to learn about your skin, how to assess it on your own, and what products you need to treat it.  If you don’t know where to start in terms of a esthetician or spa, check with your dermatologist as they either have someone in their office or they can certainly recommend someone to you.
